As a girl, I was fascinated with ancient history and Egypt. Thanks to my fascination, I often wondered why the “evidence” from archaeologists didn’t match the timeline with stories from the Bible. After all, the Bible is said to be a great record of history, even for some non-believers. As an adult, I’ve been able to accept that man makes mistakes, so there’s probably a good reason the evidence and timelines didn’t match.
When I became a mother, the same questions were brought up by my children as we studied Ancient Egypt and they tried to put the puzzle pieces together. I understood the frustration they felt, but I still didn’t have any answers. I was excited to have the opportunity to review Patterns of Evidence – Exodus and see if our questions could finally be answered.
I didn’t say a word about the DVD in advance to my family. On the chosen night, I announced that I had agreed to watch a DVD in exchange for an honest review and wanted to watch it together as a family. My teen boys are becoming more independent every day and I generally encourage them to make up their own minds and think for themselves. I expected some resistance from one son, as he’s recently decided he’s agnostic and the facts not lining up is one of his reasons. I was pleasantly surprised to find that he was actually interested in the film.
I’m not claiming that this film convinced him overnight to believe one way or the other spiritually, but he has agreed that based on this film, the evidence does exist to make the Bible a credible history book. Our family engaged in a rather lengthy conversation about the Bible and history after watching the film.
I am impressed with the quality of the film, the interviews with experts (including non-believers), and the evidence presented that I had never heard before. I can’t stop thinking about the evidence of Joseph after watching it! I recommend the Patterns of Evidence to anyone that ever had doubts, questions, or a crisis of faith. This film should also be of interest to lovers of ancient history, homeschoolers or Bible study groups looking for supplemental lessons.
