The Blessings of Unity offers insight and ideas for creating godly unity in our marriages centered around two key concepts:
- 1) Abiding in the Vine and walking in the Spirit, and
- 2) Learning and applying the concept of unity.
Unity is achieved when a man and woman strive for agreement with God by processing His Will on every decision and in every issue. Through Biblically-centered discussions of discord, division, unity, discipleship, and prayer, and through exploring Biblical examples of unity, Richard Case offers husbands and wives practical and spiritual advice for working together in unity in the Spirit so that they can more perfectly present themselves to God for his divine approval.
Don’t be fooled by the book’s size of only 130 pages and 9 short chapters. The Blessings of Unity is meatier than I expected at a quick glance.
The introduction wastes no time getting to the heart of the problem in today’s failing marriages. The author states, “Recent stats show 50-60% of all Christian marriages end in divorces, the same percentage as unbelievers”.
How’s that for a reality check? I quickly calculated in my mind all the marriages I’m personally familiar. I realized that most couples have suffered divorce as adults or they are the children of divorce.
Author Richard T. Case quickly points to the causes of these failures, and most are not surprising. Nevertheless, seeing all the causes printed together on a few short pages made a lump grow in my throat.
The first chapter promptly presents an evaluation of your marriage. The evaluation is to be filled out by both you and your spouse. The remainder of the book focuses on unity.
It’s obvious right away that this isn’t a book you are meant to devour in one sitting and put away on the shelf. Each chapter contains scripture and suggestions. I recommend working on a chapter at a time with your spouse or a marriage study group at your church.
